5 things you can do to prevent hair loss

Alopecia, more commonly known as hair loss or baldness, is a dermatological condition involving the loss of hair in various areas of the scalp (if not all), due to multiple reasons. These reasons could vary from something that runs within the family, to your diet intake, sometimes even coming down to the products you use – the list goes on.

Just like the reasons for its causes may vary, the treatments that could help stop hair loss vary too, but, what’s to say that they actually work?

Well, according to Dr Michele Green, one of NYC’s most in-demand dermatologists, there are basically five ways you could go about treating your hair. From strengthening damaged hair or keeping what you already have, to regrowing hair follicles that haven’t closed up yet, we’ve got it all laid out for you.

1. Don’t self diagnose –
The minute you start noticing your hair fall or thin – maybe due to a shampoo change or usage of different water – head to a certified dermatologist as they will be able to assess and provide valuable treatment options. You’d consider yourself lucky if you get to that cause early on as it can avoid any future hair loss endeavours or as Dr Green might add ( “Getting treatment for hair loss in its early stages can help minimize overall hair loss and increase the odds of a treatment’s efficacy.”

2. Build a proactive plan –
This involves consulting with the dermatologist on either of the three options to prevent hair loss,

(a) Finasteride: it’s a drug that helps stop the formation of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which is a hormone that causes hair to remain in a state of rest hence preventing growth. Finasteride blocks the absorption of DHT, thus making your locks grow with a reduction in growth delays.

(b) Minoxidil: A type of medication which is applied to the scalp directly allowing blood circulation to develop around the scalp. This helps strengthen, thicken and boost the hair follicle during its regrowth phase.

(c) Platelet-rich plasma (PRP): this deals with taking a blood sample and extracting the platelet-rich plasma from it, which is then injected into the scalp – by a professional of course – to help reduce hair loss. PRP is known to have growth factors that promote new hair follicles to grow.

3. Encourage supplement intake –
With the rise of supplements taking over the market, adding a few trustworthy ones to your diet could improve your head health for the better. Supplements like Viviscal and Nutrafol contain the nutrients needed in treating hair loss. Your hair needs certain nutrients like B complex and zinc, which help it grow, and Viviscal is something that provides those nutrients and more to help boost hair growth. Nutrafol contains marine collagen, saw palmetto, and ashwagandha, making it a power-packed vitamin supplement that helps prevent testosterone from being converted to DHT, sometimes reduces inflammation too, all of which is going to benefit your scalp.

4. Reduce stress-
Stress is one of the primary sources of ruining your mane and needs to be toned down a notch if you’re noticing some sort of hair loss. Therapeutic classes, massages, yoga, and meditation, are some of the options that you could adopt to help reduce stress.

5. Cut out vices-
If reducing stress did minimal damage, it’s time you start looking into your lifestyle. Smoking, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets, lousy hair care shower routines, are just a few of the things that might need to be looked at. Bad habits aggravate hair loss and face it; we’ve all got bad habits, it’s about tweaking them for better hair results.
