A23-year-old gentleman has male pattern baldness. He wants to know if hair transplant would be a good treatment for him.
Dr. Amiya Prasad is a board certified cosmetic surgeon. He has been performing hair transplant for many years. He is also the founder of a company called Trichostem® Hair Regeneration which is a remarkable solution for male and female pattern hair loss that is non-surgical.
With the onset of hair loss at a younger age and the speed of this gentleman’s progression, Dr. Prasad explains that he would need something to stabilize his hair loss. In the United States, there are two drugs used for this: minoxidil and finasteride. Minoxidil is a topical which doesn’t stop hair loss progression, but it can prolong the growth cycle of thinning hair. On the other hand, finasteride inhibits an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase which is responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone commonly referred to as DHT. It really works in slowing down the progression but it is also limited to people who have DHT-sensitive hair follicles. There are many men who do not respond to finasteride. In the current time, there are a lot of concerns about the long-term sexual side effects of finasteride, especially in younger men who refuse to take it.
In Dr. Prasad’s practice, he developed a treatment called Hair Regeneration. This procedure combines platelet-rich plasma (PRP) derived from the patient’s blood with Acellular matrix. Acellular matrix is a material used for wound healing. Years ago, it was discovered that this wound healing material, when used for transplant surgery to help hair grafts and the donor area heal, appeared to also help hair become thicker. Dr. Prasad has created a process and a predictable, consistent response where close to 100% of male pattern hair loss patients do respond and do get good results.
Dr. Prasad has patients who come from all over the world and he further refined the system and his understanding of who responds with this treatment. However, it’s not the perfect solution as it hasn’t cured baldness, but the sooner it is used on someone, the better the results are. He has been treating people as young as 18-years-old and he has seen very good results. There’s a small group of patients who have not responded to the treatment. He re-treated them and they still didn’t respond, but this is a tiny group and close to a 100% male pattern hair loss patients do respond. Some people benefit from a second injection, but for the vast majority of patients, this is a onetime treatment. The procedure is customized to the individual patient and he follows his patients very closely. He has exceeded the level of commitment and follow-up of other people who are doing similar types of treatment.
Dr. Prasad has been bringing Trichostem® Hair Regeneration to patients where they are. This treatment has been so successful that he has been able to now scale it and be offered to other areas outside of his two locations in Manhattan and Long Island. Hair transplant may be an option for this gentleman, but without stabilization, he will still lose hair. Patients who have gotten transplantation and reached their early to mid-30s have only transplanted hair left, and don’t have any of their own native hair. They still look like they don’t have hair which means they didn’t get what they wanted. Patients must think very critically and keep asking questions.
